WACA will host a WikiLeaks panel in Perth

On February 21, WikiLeaks Australian Citizens Alliance (WACA) will host a public discussion entitled “WikiLeaks and you: Privacy, human rights, and the rise of the surveillance state.”

Reportedly, the panel will feature a message from WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange. Speakers will include Assange’s lawyer Jennifer Robinson: Australian Greens party Senator Scott Ludlam; and Suelette Dreyfus, who co-authored the book Underground with Assange.

The event’s Facebook page states:

“Wikileaks has revealed war crimes, banking scandals, the growth of state surveillance technologies and closer to home, a human rights horror show in West Papua.

“The governmental and corporate war on Wikileaks poses serious questions about everyone’s civil and political rights, the protection of whistleblowers, freedom of speech and the future of the internet.

“While more of our lives are conducted online, from sharing information and debate to financial transactions and social media, governments are cracking down, including our own with alarming proposals for retaining all of our data for 2 years!

“Join us for a conversation on whether we can have transparency of governments and privacy for the rest of us.”

The panel is scheduled for Thursday February 21, from 6-8pm, and will be held at the UWA Austin Lecture Theatre.
